Soar Island

Design Competition Entry

The landscape concept for the redevelopment of Soar Island was to create a strong landscape/ecological structure. The theme of flight and flow, reflecting the island’s name is one of the founding principles for the design, along with
the principle of 24hr presence.

Our scheme balances community need with ecological enhancement, whilst preserving and enhancing the historic features and character of the industrial setting of the Grand Union Canal and the natural river environment.

The division of the site into landscape character areas provides distinct environments enabling the island to become a diverse and exciting visual landscape feature.

The design ensures a variety of outdoor spaces and an environmental educational facility within the core of the city, with ‘The Water Garden’ functioning as part of the surface and grey water attenuation scheme for an on-site mixed use building.
